Sort background information:
The Urban Environment and Geographic Information Systems
Laboratory based on the evolution of the GIS Laboratory which was founded at 1989, is
affiliated to the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences.
The aims of the Laboratory include the promotion of scientific
knowledge through the organisation of scientific conferences, the undertaking of research
and applied projects, the support of the Universitys educational requirements, the
design and evaluation of training activities, as well as the consultative support for
spatial decision-making procedures, according to the trends of new technologies.
Legal Status
The Urban Environment and Geographic Information Systems Laboratory is
affiliated to the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences.
Scientific Specialisation
The laboratory focuses on the basic and applied research in the fields of:
- Urban Environment (ex. Urban Development, Operational
research, Urban Planning, employment needs in the urban space and relative educational
programs)
- Geographic Information Systems, aimed at the
integration of spatial information (ex. data bases of digital cartographic information,
allocations of socio-economic and demographic phenomena, development of planning models)
intended to provide handy interfaces, which connect the available proper data to the
end-user needs.
Particularly, the experience of the laboratory in matters of Spatial analysis and
Programming on National and Regional level, of Cartography, of geographical analysis and
synthesis by using G.I.S. conserns the followings topics:
- Creation of informational systems for the dynamic monitoring of the E.U. development
Projects, in combination of the Management Information Systems with the Geographic
Information Systems (M.I.S./ G.I.S)
- Creation of spatial data bases, spatial indicator bases, and cartographic illustrations,
in the framework of the study-research Organisation of a Spatial Planning
Observatory in Greece.
- Technical Specifications for the Specific Spatial Planning Studies
(European Union, program ENVIREG), in which apart the specifications for spatial analysis
for the study area the technical specifications for the creation of digital Geographical
Information Data Bases and the construction of new Cartographic Symbols are included.
- Elaboration of Pilot Projects for the allocation of economic activities and uses (ex.
Location allocation of industry areas, touristic zones etc.)
Recent projects (indicative)
- Analysis of the institutional capacities of the local agencies in order to undertake the
implementation of actions concerning the promotion of local development (application for
the Region of Thessaly)
- Investigation of the mechanisms and the procedures of innovative growth in Europe, in
the framework of European integration / networks of inter-regional co-operation (report to
the Commission of the European Communities, DG V)
- Research on the assessment of the public sectors contribution to the mobility of
the Greek Regions endogenous development potential, constituted for the Institute of
Continuous Education of the National Centre of Public Administration
- Research on policies and measures relating to the social exclusions combating,
concentrated on urban areas (Greater Athens area)
- Research project: Organisation of the Greek Spatial Planning Observatory, Greek Ministry
of Environment, Spatial Planning and Public Works, 1996-1998.
- Technical Specifications for the Specific Spatial Planning Studies (European
Union, program ENVIREG), Ministry of Environment 1994-1996.
- Cartographic support using Geographic Information Systems in the pilot program:Business
Program of the Municipalities of Keratsini and Drapetsona (Community s initiative
URBAN, 1994)
